Integrating Mental Health Care in General Health Care

World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation Philippines (WAPR)

WAPR is a non-profit organization with multi-disciplinary representation including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, public administration, media, and MH practitioners.

WAPR is a professional organization of, for, and by mental health care practitioners and other individuals who support the need to reach the unreached with mental and social concerns.

We are one of 81 member countries of the Global World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation and participate in the various committees of this global organization. We have led the pursuit of the objectives of this when the WAPR Phil Founding President held various leadership roles until she was elected President of the WAPR Global from 2009 to 2012.

Our Mission

Reach the unreached Filipinos who are vulnerable to mental ill health or have mental health concerns, to provide psychosocial care to individuals and families suffering from mental and behavioral disorders due to psychosocial stress, including exposure to physical and natural disasters.

WAPR Core Values

  • Mental health is integral to the individual’s state of health and covers physical, mental, and spiritual well-being

WAPR Programs

WAPR seeks to ensure that mental health services are humane, rights-based, available, accessible, sustained, comprehensive and empowering.

It gears its programs and advocacies toward the establishment of community mental health services, especially their integration in the general health care delivery system at the primary level of health care.

Capacity Building

Led and participated the Reframing of Mental Health and in the formulation of the Conceptual Framework for Mental Health (under the Philippine Mental Health Law of 2018), in collaboration with member NGOs of HUMAN in 2020-2021

Training modules developed and uploaded in the DOH Academy for online learning (2022).

Developed the Framework for Community based Mental Health Services with support from DOH and WHO (2021)

Developing A Culture of Research webinar series organized by the PCMH Committee on Research, WAPR is a member of this committee and co-organized the webinar series.

Implemented a capacity building program on Community-based Mental Health Services in Quezon, Samar, Iloilo, in collaboration with the Christen Blinden Foundation (2018-2019).

2018 attended the workshop middle and low income countries on the Global Challenges and Opportunities in Mental Health in the Sustainable Development Goals Era.

2019 attended and served as member of the Steering Committee in the Global Conference on Social Determinants on Mental Health organized by the London Academy for Medical Sciences.

Advocacy and Networking

Attended the Global Conference on Social Determinants of Mental Health organized by the UK Academy of Social Sciences, London, UK (2019)

Care Farming to assist individuals recovering from mental disorders to reintegrate into their communities and be self- sufficient and sustain their recovery

Developed and forged collaboration with the UP College of Medicine on the promotion of Telepsychiatry (2021, in progress)

Conducted webinar on Mental Health, in collaboration with the Philippine Acupuncture Society, 2020

Conducted training/debriefing for DSWD-NCR social workers to address burnout (done on request from DSWD)

WAPR has sustained the conduct of a National Conference on Psychosocial Rehabilitation since its organization to the present. Alongside the annual conference, WAPR has organized the Mini-Olympics for mental health directed at gathering recovered patients in a day of sports and other recreational activity and promote anti-stigma program.
